We should have checked out cartridge use BEFORE we bought the fax. Next time we will know that a bargain is
only a bargain if the accessories are a good buy also.

Like others that have complained here this is one of the worst HP cartridges I have ever had, and the worst part is it is the only size my fax (fairly new) uses. I went to have it re-filled and of course, they don't refill this size. I had to spend close to $40.00 for this to stop working. I don't fax a lot so it must dry up or something. I have decided for now I won't have the fax receipts I refuse to buy another one so soon after the last one I just bought and I am afraid it will stop working too. It keeps saying "install new cartridge" it is new, it is installed and still isn't reading it it has to do with the foil on the cartridge. Others surmised that the foil on the side of this thing is causing it to report "Empty" long before it actually is. One reviewer did what I'm often tempted to do with things that don't work and took a ball-peen hammer to it, discovering plenty of ink after the machine claimed it was out. To all of you, a huge "thank you!" I popped the cartridge from my fax, rubbed the foil vigorously with a paper towel, reinserted the cartridge, and was asked by the obscenely tiny LCD window if it was new or used. I lied and said it was new. (Well, it WAS practically new!) It said the ink level could not be determined, dug in its heels and refused to budge. So I hit the "access cartridge" button again and was asked to replace the cartridge and press OK. I simply pressed OK, but this time told the truth and said it was used. Now I got the world's most obscure message. It appeared to be random characters. Ignoring the possibility that it was demanding my soul as compensation, I said "OK." At which point I was immediately rewarded with an alignment page and about a ream's worth of junk faxes from condos in Florida, health plans, bank card offers, and the one fax I was actually waiting for. How I wish the memory were editable . In any case, I revived the cartridge. Will I get all the ink out this time? Will I have to keep massaging the little thing periodically? Will the junk faxes never end? Will my business contacts ever stop using fax so that I can, too? Will I ever stop asking these questions? You know I just read all the reviews right after my fax machine said "change cartridge." I don't fax that much. I read where some reviews said the cartridge dried up after two months.So after reading the reviews I took my cartridge outside and put it between two pieces of cardboard and then I smashed it with a ball peen hammer. You should see all the black inck inside that gushed out and a square sponge insiode soaked with black ink. It was not dried out at all.
This is a bad design and I think it has to do with the gold foil sensors on the side of the cartridge. They are not reading these cartridges correctly. There was plenty of ink in there. I will not buy such a cheap fax again and I will read reviews first before I buy.
