The XL cartidges are a significant improvement over the original HP 02 cartridge. The longer lasting cartridge means in addition to lasting significantly longer they waste less resources plastic, metal etc. When you realize that some colors are used more frequently than others often buying the individual colors needed rather than a multi cartridge package makes a lot of sense especially with Amazon Prime and the speedy delivery.

I buy and use the regular 02 cartridges. They work well and I recycle them. The "XL" cartridges advertise "50% more" ink, but at exactly 50% more the price, so what is the value?

The HP 02XL cartridge yields 1 1/2 times the amount of ink as the standard cartridge at less than 1 1/2 times the price, but more importantly, you have to change them less often, which saves time. A lot of time with my Photosmart C7280, which takes a ridiculous amount of time to complete its procedure after a cartridge change.

The 02XL cartridges contain 50% more than the regular 02 cartridges. But they cost 50% more, so you're not getting the usual volume discount we all normally expect when buying other items like milk, cereal, laundry soap, etc. And as it turns out, if you recycle your empty cartridges at an office supply store like Staples, you get $2.00 per cartridge. Therefore the 02XL are actually MORE expensive. Here's the math: since the 02XL cartridges contain 50% more ink than the 02, you would get the same amount of ink from two 02XL cartridges as you would from three standard 02 cartridges. Two XL are $29.98 (2 x $14.99) minus $4 recycle rebate (2 x $2) = $25.98 cost for the XL. Three standard cartridges are $30.51 (3 x $10.17) minus $6 recycle rebate (3 x $2) = $24.51 cost for the standard size, a $1.47 SAVINGS over the XL.
