I found myself resorting to using paper a lot more often to sketch out ideas, and I often found myself wanting to draw lines. Once I began to get the hang of using a large white sheet of paper for doing some drawing, idea-sketching, and writing, I began dashing off calendars here and there. I also like to do things like draw seating charts for the classes I teach. These are tasks that involve drawing nice straight lines and taking some quick measurements.
I had a plastic 6-inch ruler, but since I have recently discovered a wonderful big pad of white paper that measures 12x18 inches, I decided to hop on Amazon and buy a nice long ruler. I decided on a whim to get one that had a right-angle because I often like to line up a ruler to the edge of a page to make sure that I am square. Also, although I am a computer programmer by trade, I somehow find sketching screen layouts to be more intuitive when I do it on a white sheet of paper, so this straight-edge measuring device comes in handy then as well. I am now able to make nice big screen layout sketches with pretty accurate measurements.
The one major drawback I can see is that it does not have measurements in centimeters. It is entirely marked in inches, on all sides and edges. It does have handy break-downs of inches, however. This is the ruler to get if you ever want to measure 7/32nds of an inch, or if you happen to do a lot of work in thirds of an inch -an entire two foot long edge to this ruler is dedicated to marking off inches in increments of thirds and sixths (as opposed to the usual halves and fourths).
The ruler is of solid metal construction. Mine arrived well wrapped in cardboard and tape. Nevertheless, there was a noticeable dent in the ruler due to getting knocked around during shipping, I presume. I was able to use just my finger strength to straighten the ruler out again, and now it looks perfectly flat. Having said that, it is certainly not a flimsy piece of metal -it will make do as a weapon in a pinch.
It is hard to appreciate exactly how large 14 inches by two feet is. Suffice it to say that you will easily be able to knock over your beer if you wave this thing around too much at your desk. I find it the perfect size, but I can imagine daintier human beings than I who could get by with a much smaller piece of equipment.

Our shop is rather small in size, and tight on space, and this L-Square has proven to be just the right size for most work we need to do. Like that it is light weight Aluminum.
